DURBAN model, social media influencer and entrepreneur, Naliyani Uma Govender, was chosen as one of the faces and to promote a first of its kind fashion collaboration between H&M and international designer, Anamika Khanna.

Khanna is a fashion designer based in Kolkata, India.

Govender, 27, of Reservoir Hills, said being selected to be part of the collaboration was a “dream come true”.

“I have had a long-standing relationship with H&M, having worked on several campaigns with them in the past. When my agent reached out to let me know that H&M had shortlisted me for this campaign, I was over the moon.

“The excitement grew when I found out I would be leading the campaign in South Africa, and more specifically in Durban. It was a surreal and deeply rewarding moment for me,” she said.

Govender, who is also an actress, said her role in promoting the collection is multi-faceted.

Her latest role is in 'The Mommy Club: Sugar and Spice'.

“As one of the faces of the campaign in South Africa, I am actively involved in creating content that highlights the beauty and craftsmanship of Anamika Khanna’s designs.

“This included planning with my team - photoshoots, videography and social media promotion to create a buzz ahead of the launch. It is also about showcasing the collection in the best possible light and connecting it with the audience here in South Africa,” she said.

Govender showcases one of the designs from the collection.

Govender said the collection was a “breath-taking fusion of traditional Indian opulence and contemporary style”.

“You can expect vivid colours, intricate patterns, and hand-embroidered embellishments that are signature to her work. From flowing skirts, capes, kaftans, and dresses to more street-smart, sportier styles. This collection is incredibly versatile, perfect for both day and night. It is truly a celebration of art and fashion that offers something for everyone.

“I am incredibly honoured and grateful to be part of this ground-breaking collaboration. Furthermore, seeing Indian representation in the global fashion industry is deeply fulfilling, especially as I get to bring a piece of my heritage and my hometown of Durban into the spotlight,” she said.

Govender added that the shooting of the promotion video was done “in the heart” of Durban’s CBD, highlighting the city’s historic landmarks.

“Being able to represent my community brings me immense joy. This experience has not only opened doors for me but also for many young creatives in the entertainment and arts industry. I hope this is just the beginning of many more international collaborations, and I am excited about what the future holds,” she said.

The collection was launched exclusively in Durban on September 5.
