Johannesburg - When she learnt about the results for her preliminary exams, Fourways High School learner, Siphesihle Skosana, says she was overwhelmed by the news but later was full of pride as she had worked hard.
The 18-year-old Skosana bagged six distinctions at the end of her prelims giving her confidence for the final exams.
For her finals she achieved five distinctions in Afrikaans (first additional language), maths, life orientation, accounting and business studies.
“When I first found out that I was one of the learners that did well in the prelims, I was overwhelmed at the news, however, after a while I felt a sense of immense pride because I worked very hard and that wasn’t in vain. Knowing that I achieved good marks in my exams gave me the confidence I needed for the final exams.”
She said the year was not a stroll in the park particularly with the need to balance her academics and being a leader
“The year was not as easy as I would have liked it to be. I had a lot going on in terms of leadership and my academics, I had to learn to balance being a leader and a learner simultaneously which was challenging at first,” she said
She added that the was a list of triumphs that she recalls despite other challenges that were there.
“Despite the difficultly of the early stages of the year I had some positive moments, I was voted in as the chairperson of the Regional Executive Council of Joburg north in March. In October, I was awarded an honours blazer for academics which is a goal I have been working towards since I started high school.”
Skosana said there’s a lot she took from 2021 especially having to deal with the scourge of the coronavirus.
“The year was a wholesome learning experience for me because I grew significantly as a person through events such as having to deal with the pandemic while doing matric and needing to have the discipline to push myself to work hard regardless of everything going on around me.”
This year the young academic plans to begin her journey to become a chartered accountant and still uphold her standard of being an academic achiever.
“This year I plan on attending university to do a bachelor’s degree to study towards becoming a chartered accountant in the coming years. I aim to maintain my academic excellence and get as many distinctions as possible,” she said.
