Gert Johan Coetzee, a celebrated designer, made a significant statement at the SA Fashion Week, a prestigious three-day event showcasing fashion design, creativity, and craftsmanship.
Coetzee, who recently debuted his spring/summer 2025 collection at the London Fashion Week, also showcased his brand-new collection at SAFW on Thursday, setting the bar high.
The collection was inspired by the country’s landscapes, cultures, and resilient people; each piece blends traditional elements with contemporary design, creating a visual narrative that honours the past while embracing the future.
This collection is not only a display of exquisite craftsmanship and design but also a statement of the beauty of diversity and the power of unity.
Through bold patterns, vibrant colours, and intricate details, the collection captures the essence of South Africa — a land of contrasts and harmony, where tradition meets innovation.
The garments are designed to inspire confidence, celebrate individuality, and empower the wearer, making them a perfect embodiment of Coetzee’s vision for the modern South African identity.
He explains his decision to present his collection on the lovely lawns of the Union Buildings in Pretoria by citing the buildings’ illustrious past, magnificent architecture, and eternal spirit as reasons.
“The Union Buildings, with their majestic architecture and rich history, stand as a symbol of unity, democracy, and the enduring spirit of South Africa. Completed in 1913, these buildings have witnessed some of the most pivotal moments in our nation’s history.
“From the inauguration of Nelson Mandela as the first democratically elected president of South Africa to countless celebrations of our nation’s resilience, the Union Buildings are more than just a landmark — they are a beacon of hope and progress.
“This collection draws deeply from the essence of South Africa, reflecting its vibrant cultures and resilient spirit. The Union Buildings, with their panoramic views and elegant architecture, provide the perfect setting for this collection, mirroring the themes of empowerment, unity, and the celebration of our shared heritage.”
Coetzee, who is not only creating fashion but also telling a story of innovation, pride, and empowerment, also reigned supreme at Miss SA last month.
His exceptional talent was showcased on the Miss South Africa pageant night, with 11 stunning gowns transforming the stage into a breathtaking runway.
