Tragedy struck at a youth soccer day over the weekend as Under-17 player Tlhokomelo Phasa died as a result of a severe chest injury he sustained during a match.

Phasa was unable to respond to medical treatment during the game, as West Youth Academy (WYA) confirmed the death of its player. According to reports, Phasa was struck in the chest by the ball.

WYA said in a Facebook post alongside a video of Phasa:

“We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Thlokomelo Kevin Mareme Phasha. Our u17 player who passed on the field of play on the 21/07/2024, whilst playing against Jacanda callies in an u19 match.”

‘Pray for healing’

WYA went on to send condolences to the players, parents and fans who witnessed the incident, who then also watched as paramedics were unable to help Phasa.

“We pray for emotional and mental healing during this time of great loss.

“To freinds [sic] and schoolmates may you find healing, his joyful memories shall live on..”

The post on the WYA page received 199 reactions and 18 shares to date, with all sending their condolences.

WYA said it will release details of a memorial and funeral service for Phasa once the family has communicated the information with the club.

The youngster had just celebrated his 17th birthday on July 14. In another post by WYA, it wished the player a happy birthday using his nickname ‘Kevin’.

The WYA is a youth academy primarily focused on soccer development for boys and girls from the ages of eight to 18.

Last month, WYA were involved in the Johannesburg qualifiers of the Engen Knockout Challenge. The Engen Knockout is a development program in South Africa that creates a pathway for the country’s young talent to progress to the PSL leagues and the Premiership.
