Cape Town City’s search for stability is nearly over, with interim coach Muhsin Ertugral confirming the appointment of a new head coach, who will be named as soon as April.
This announcement comes amid a turbulent period for the Citizens, who have struggled under Ertugral since his January arrival following Eric Tinkler’s dismissal. When Ertugral first took over, there was a flicker of optimism with wins over Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates brought early promise.
But the reality soon set in, with just three wins from 11 matches, leaving City languishing due to inconsistency and 10th in the Betway Premiership standings.

Speaking after a disappointing 2-0 loss to AmaZulu on Sunday in Durban, the Turkish born coach revealed the next man to take his seat had already begun monitoring the side and will be announced in due time.
“We have already decided on the coach, and he has seen the team,” Ertugral said.
“The plan is to secure things in April, then we can focus on the future. It’s important to build a foundation. The new coach needs time to implement his vision.”
Although the club has yet to confirm the name of the new coach, Independent Media understands that their is keen interest in former Ajax Cape Town coach Andries Ulderink, who coached that club bewteen 2018 and 2020. But while a change on the touchline looms, Ertugral’s role at City will remain pivotal.
The 62-year-old, known for his experience in South African football, will focus on the club’s youth development as part of his technical advisory duties. It's clear this is a subject close to his heart, given his belief in Cape Town City's ability to cultivate young talent having been a part of Ajax Cape Town in the past.
He also handed 16-year-old wonderkid Emile Witbooi his debut against Usuthu.

“Cape Town City is built on nurturing young players,” Ertugral said.
“We’ve seen it – our players are playing all over the country. And that’s something we will continue to push. You need the courage to back young talent like Emile Witbooi, and I believe in that wholeheartedly. That’s part of the long-term vision I have for this club.”
Though the road ahead is still uncertain, one thing is clear: the new coach will inherit a team with a strong youth structure in place, and a long-term plan designed for growth.
