Springboks captain Siya Kolisi is focused on securing a spot in the 2027 Rugby World Cup and has warned his competitors that he is ready to fight for his place.

The 34-year-old Kolisi returned to South Africa this year to join the Sharks after leaving the French club Racing 92. Since his return, he has impressed both at the club level and with the national team.

However, despite his impressive performances, there are some doubts about his chances of making the squad for the global showpiece due to his advancing age. Kolisi is currently one of the older players in the Springbok setup, and will be 36 by the time the 2027 tournament arrives.

Building squad depth

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus also provided more opportunities to young players last year, which was a clear attempt to build squad depth and refresh the team.

Meanwhile, 34-year-old winger Makazole Mapimpi who also formed part of the back-to-back Rugby World Cup triumphs has already confirmed that he was not sure if he would make the squad in Australia.

Kolisi is widely regarded as one of the greatest captains in the history of the game, having led South Africa to world cup success in 2019 and 2023.

“When I put on the green-and-gold jersey, I feel like a superhero. I feel like I can do anything and I don’t want to lose that. I don’t want to give that up,” Kolisi told The Times.

“The next person that takes it [the jersey] from me, they’re going to have to grab it, because I’m going to fight. And my body feels strong, so I think I can.”
