Firstly, let me start off by saying, you’ll be going to the Soweto derby, which is the biggest event in the local sporting calendar, so congratulations!

But like any other first-timer, you’ll need some guidelines on how to manoeuvre your way around this life-changing event. So, here are 10 tips from yours truly.

Step 1: Wake up early – It’s very important for you to get the basic things out of the way as early as possible – eat breakfast, drink your meds, feed your pets, get petrol for the car, and all that.

Step 2: Check traffic directory – On derby day, certain routes do not operate. So, you need to familiarise yourself with the working routes in and around the stadium, and what areas you can park in.

Step 3: Don’t buy counterfeit tickets – If you did not get your ticket from a reputable source, do not go to the stadium. You’ll not be granted access, and worst-case scenario, you can be arrested for a fake ticket. Moreover, the match is already soldout, so beware scalpers and chancers this week.

Step 4: Have cold, hard cash – It is easier to deal with queues and kiosks if you have cash on you, as it gets terribly busy before the game, during half-time, and after full-time.

Step 5: Decide on your team colours – On the day, you must decide which colours you are nailing your mast to – if you are not a neutral fan. Are you a Buccaneer or Khosi? That will help with who you’ll interact with pre-match, while also instilling a sense of pride and purpose on the day.

Step 6: Know the stadium rules – There are certain items like alcohol, chairs, and weapons that are prohibited from entering the stadium.

Step 7: Be vigilant – Most of the 90 000 spectators who’ll fill up the Calabash will be total strangers to you, so it’s important to know from whom and where you can ask for help or assistance. Keep your personal item close and pace yourself when enjoying a beverage or two.

Step 8: Have fun – The sold-out Calabash will give you goosebumps, so it’s important to soak it all in and capture every possible moment. That doesn’t necessarily mean enjoying the moment through the lens of a phone. Three will be plenty of that, too, but sometimes just experiencing the moment can create the best of memories ...

Step 9: Use your social media – Let the country know your derby experience – as this is one of the most sought-after events around the globe – by posting on your social media platforms.

Step 10: Bring your patience – It’s very full and busy. So, keep calm while you find your way around the stadium. Try not to get into petty arguments, and keep cool. Avoid as people become who become ‘too passionate’ about the derby. Be lekker.

Step 11: Enjoy the spectacle – Once you are in the stadium, congratulations – you’ve made it through all the hurdles. Enjoy the entertainment and look forward to the clash between the Soweto Giants.
