A bus carrying schoolchildren collided with a truck on Black Reef Road and Dekema Road near Wadeville, Germistion, in Ekurhuleni, just days after a separate crash claimed the lives of four schoolchildren.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesperson Thabiso Makgato said the children were being transported from Ramaphosa informal settlement to Segutlong Primary School.

“One 12-year-old boy with slight injuries and the rest of the children are also being given medical attention,” Makgato said.

She added that there are no fatalities.

“Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and Emergency Management Services (EMS) on scene,” she added.

The accident comes a day after 16 people died in a City of Ekurhuleni municipal bus that was carrying people to work, which lost control and landed on the side of the R21 in Kempton Park.

Twelve people died at the scene, while four more died in different hospitals.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RMTC) said the death toll from the bus remained at 16, while 41 other passengers and the driver were still in hospital.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, together with the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport, Andile Mngwevu, are expected to hold a media briefing to provide an update on the tragic R21 bus collision.

“The briefing will cover the latest developments from the ongoing investigation, details regarding the victims and those injured, as well as the City’s interventions and support provided to the affected families,” said Ramatolo Tlotleng, the city’s acting spokesperson.

Tlotleng said the briefing will be held at ACSA Western Precinct, Aviation Park, O.R. Tambo International Airport, Kempton Park, at 11am.

On Monday, IOL News reported that four schoolchildren were killed, and five others critically injured after a crash involving two vehicles outside Daveyton, in Ekurhuleni.

The horrific crash occurred on the N12 westbound just before the Putfontein Road off-ramp, around 7.45am.

One of the vehicles was a private scholar transport, which was transporting the learners to school.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has confirmed the identities of the four schoolchildren killed in the crash.

He said the deceased include two siblings, a boy in Grade 1 and Grade 3, from Tom Newby Primary School in Benoni, a Grade 1 boy learner from Rynfield Primary School, also in Benoni, and a Grade R boy learner from an ECD centre that has not yet been identified.

Chiloane also confirmed that a Grade 3 girl from Rynfield Primary School is in critical condition, and has been admitted to a local hospital for urgent medical care.
