Durban - Four suspects were arrested after they robbed two pupils outside a school in the Northdale area of Pietermaritzburg this week.

Mi7 National Group director Colin David, said at around midday, they received information that two pupils were robbed at gunpoint by four suspects outside a school on Wednesday.

David said Mi7 armed response units proceeded to the school and met with the victims.

According to David, the victims reported that the suspects stole their cellphones.

He said the victims provided a detailed description of the suspects as well as the getaway vehicle they used.

“Mi7 reaction officers then worked quickly to inform Control Room Operators who immediately dispatched backup units, including the police, to the location,” said David.

David said the Control Room Operators also tracked the vehicle across the Mi7 Surveillance Net to determine the approximate whereabouts of the vehicle in the Northdale area.

This information was relayed to Mi7 teams on the ground, he said.

“Mi7 teams, including members of Mountain Rise police's Projects Team, combed the area in search of the suspects and eventually spotted their vehicle on Khan Road. The vehicle was brought to a stop,” he said.

David said four occupants were found inside, all of whom were positively identified by the victims.

“In their possession, teams found a gas-powered pistol and knives. Other items including cellphones (including those belonging to the victims) and cash - believed to have been stolen - were also found,” he said.

He said all four suspects were taken into police custody.

“Police believe the suspects may be linked to other similar crimes in the area,” said David.

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed that four suspects were arrested for robbery.

She said the suspects will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
