Durban: KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli said the panga attack on a seven-year-old and murder of his three-year-old brother last week is a painful reminder of the violence that continues to plague the province and commended police for the swift arrest of the alleged suspect.

IPSS Search and Rescue said the body of the toddler was recovered around 2pm on Friday afternoon in the upper oThongathi area and handed over to SAPS.

IPSS spokesperson Samantha Meyrick said the child was reported missing on Thursday, after his seven-year-old brother had allegedly been viciously assaulted by their step-father with what is believed to have been a panga.

She said the stepfather had reportedly disappeared with the child, while his other brother had been left in a critical condition.

Almost 50 people were involved in the search, including members from IPSS Search and Rescue, IPSS Search and Rescue Tongaat, SAPS K9 Search and Rescue, Durban Metro Police Search and Rescue, Mobiclaw, ER24, among many more volunteers.

“Our condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased,” said Meyrick.

Premier Ntuli also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the young boy and expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, condemning the brutal incident.

He called for the justice system to impose the harshest punishment possible on the perpetrator.

"The killing of this innocent child is a crime beyond comprehension, and the pain inflicted upon the family and community is immeasurable. We call upon the law to ensure that the perpetrator faces the full might of justice. Such heinous acts must not go unpunished," said Ntuli.

Ntuli said this crime has shattered our community.

“This crime serves as a painful reminder of the violence that continues to plague our province. I commend the police and all stakeholders for their swift action in apprehending the suspect. We trust the justice system will ensure that the perpetrator is held accountable for this barbaric act.”

He also reiterated the Provincial Government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society and intensifying the fight against violence.

"We must remain united as a society to eradicate violence, particularly against children. Together, we can ensure a safer KwaZulu-Natal for all," he added.

Ntuli urged communities to stay vigilant in reporting any signs of abuse or violence.

"It is imperative that we work together to protect the most vulnerable members of our society. No child should ever have to endure such pain and suffering," Premier Ntuli added.
