Durban - As the matric final examinations are about to get under way, the IFP has issued a warning over end-of-school celebrations, calling on KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Mbali Fraser to put an end to what is popularly known as ‘pens down’ parties.
IFP spokesperson Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa noted that once the matric final examinations conclude, there are usually parties held which are attended by pupils across the province.
She warned of this annual ritual in which entertainment outlets such as clubs, lifestyles venues and taverns host ‘pens down’ events.
“Unfortunately, outcomes from these events have proved to be detrimental to students, with some having their dreams shattered due to just a few hours of entertainment,” said the IFP spokesperson on Tuesday.
“As these celebrations are often characterised by intoxication and substance abuse, leaving young people vulnerable, unsuspecting youth can be targeted by groups of human traffickers.
“Although the completion of exams is to be celebrated, we urge all learners to put safety first, as they have their entire lives ahead of them,” KaMadlopha-Mthethwa concluded.
On Tuesday, some matriculants across South Africa began their final year examinations with the Computer Applications Technology exam. However, the exams will kick off for the majority of students on Friday with English Paper 1.
