The African Hair Awards has taken place annually for the past five years alongside the Africa International Hair Extravaganza since inception in 2012.
The first Awards took place at the Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa. 2016 marked the fifth year with the platform receiving media coverage from the likes of Top Billing, BET A list, Metro FM, YFM, Kaya FM; just to mention a few.
The Awards in 2016 also saw Hairstylists that work behind the scenes of leading soapies also gain recognition for their creative and talent in presenting beautiful hair trends that a number of local celebrities showcase on the red carpet.
The African Hair Awards remains Africa’s First Ethnic Hair platform that gives recognition to this multi-billion-rand Industry on continent.
Previous winners have included the likes of Bonang Matheba as Best Hair Styled Celebrity of the Year; Nthato Mashishi as Stylist of the Year; Lajawi Beaute Café as Salon of the Year; Scandal Best Hair Styled Soapie Crew; L’Oréal Professional African Hair Institute won the Hair Institute Of The Year; Darling as Best Hair Fiber, Weave & Wig Supplier/Distributor Of The Year and Best Innovative Brand went to Cavil Fusion Oil Hair Root Nourisher with Black Castor Oil and Argan Oil just to mention a few.
The African Hair Awards and Africa International Hair Extravaganza has been self-funded without a headline sponsor. Whilst the Department of Trade and Industry provided some financial support, it was not sufficient the full costs.
The organisers have thus decided to secure new key partners to continue celebrating and giving recognition to the Ethnic Hair Industry on a bigger and better platform as interest is shown by industry. As the organisers finalise agreement with possible partners they have decided to postpone the 2017 African Hair Awards to 2018.
We are aware that this event has become a highlight on calendar of the Ethnic Hair Industry players both in South Africa and rest of the African Continent. This year's nomination was received from industry players in Cameroon, Ghana, Zambia and Botswana.
The organisers will consider applications submitted this year but will also afford the industry to further opportunity to nominate possible winners in 2018. We believe the event will be bigger and better from 2018 onwards and look forward to circulating details in due course.
