Painting the right picture

First impressions last. However, many of us forget about creating or decorating the entrance halls of our houses - the very first room guests see. A fresh coat of paint is an affordable option.

At the outset, it's important to remember that colour tends to be much more intense on a wall than it is on a paint chip and, with walls closer together, may appear even more so.

When selecting a colour, try covering all the colours on the paint chip sample except the one you are considering. Isolating the colour will give a truer picture of what it will look like on the wall.

Examine the chips under both natural and artificial lighting, and preferably in daylight hours and at night, in the areas to be painted.

You could buy small tins of the colours you like and apply it in small blocks on different walls in the room.

Buy all the paint you need for a specific project at one time to ensure colour consistency.

Remember the importance of good surface preparation, buying quality paints, using quality brushes and tools, and making sure the area you are painting is well ventilated.
