"Bodies of Water"

Delve into a world which unpacks the human condition and the ecology of our planet in the theatre production, “Bodies of Water".

This soulful contemporary dance experience is the work of award-winning choreographer Lliane Loots, who has joined forces with celebrated Durban musicians Refiloe Olifant on violin and Mandla Matsha on percussion to offer a beautiful, soulful and thought-provoking new season of contemporary dance.

The play, says Loots, “embraces a double meaning as the dance work negotiates the ecology of water alongside an awareness that the human body is made up of 70% water".

To set the dancing moving body as a breathing metaphor for climate justice, six Flatfoot Dance Company dancers (Sifiso Khumalo, Jabu Siphika, Zinhle Nzama, Siseko Duba, Sbonga Ndlovu and Ndumiso Dube) will face what happens to bodies in times of personal and political crisis.

“Set against our own African geopolitics, and a larger ‘body’ of social disease, ‘Bodies of Water’ comes back to the ideas of how we relate to ‘bodies of water’ as both artistic and political metaphors for survival," says Loots.

Meanwhile, Flatfoot also partnered with lighting designer Wesley Maherry whose bespoke designs for this dance company has seen him win numerous awards. His lighting design is supported by his audiovisual/ cinematic stage projection designs that give the production a unique performance landscape.

“Shrek The Musical”

Durban theatregoers can join Shrek and his loveable sidekick Donkey later this month at the Milkwood Theatre at Danville (a newly built, professional theatre) as they embark on an action-packed adventure to rescue Princess Fiona from a castle protected by a fearsome dragon.

“Shrek The Musical”, a stage adaptation of the blockbuster film, "will retain the best elements from the movie", including its infectious soundtrack and its hit song "I'm a Believer".

Meanwhile, the cast will include the stars from KZN’s Young Performers’ Project (YPP) and will feature 35 performers from senior primary and high school learners as well as post-matric learners studying at the International School of Performing Arts (ISPA).

Lyle Buxton, who played the title role a decade ago, will reprise the role of Shrek. James Armstrong will star as Donkey, Chloe Marot will play the adult Fiona, and Damien Butt will feature as Lord Farquaad.

YPP’s version will also see three actresses playing Fiona – as a child, as a teen and as an adult; and two playing Shrek – a young Shrek and an adult Shrek.

It is directed by Lisa Bobbert, who will also helm set design, with Evashnee Pillay as the choreography and Des Govender tasked with music direction.

Where: The Milkwood Theatre at Danville Park Girls' High School.

When: April 25 to May 2. Show times are at 2pm or 7pm, depending on the day.
