After a remarkable seven-decade career that has left an indelible mark on the music industry, legendary singer Johnny Mathis has announced his retirement from touring at the age of 89, citing “accelerated” memory issues.
The beloved artist made this heartfelt declaration on his Facebook page, addressing the concerns of fans around the world.
“While there are still some exciting concerts coming up, regrettably, all Johnny Mathis concerts from June 2025 onwards are now cancelled," shared Mathis in a bittersweet statement.
His final performance is set for May 18, 2025, at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey, marking the conclusion of his “Voice of Romance Tour.”
The post went on to express gratitude to his devoted fans: “Johnny Mathis and his entire staff send their heartfelt gratitude to all Mathis Fans worldwide for your continued love and support of his music. It's truly been ‘Wonderful, Wonderful.’”
This sentiment echoes the tone of his notable career, which has been marked by warmth and connection with his audience.
In response to an outpouring of support and inquiries about potentially filming or streaming his last concerts, Mathis clarified, “It’s a lovely idea, but unfortunately filming or streaming the final concerts is not going to be possible."
"We’re sorry for any disappointment. Johnny is just retiring from touring and concerts, so the good news is there is potentially new music in the works.”
This hint at new music offers a glimmer of hope to fans eager for more from the iconic artist.
Born John Royce Mathis, he cultivated a love for music early on, influenced by his family and the vibrant culture of music in San Francisco after moving from Texas.
With encouragement from his father, who taught him his first song and gifted him an upright piano, Mathis blossomed musically.
His early years included singing in church choirs and vocal lessons, eventually leading to his discovery by club owner Helen Noga during his college years.
Her support propelled him into the limelight as a sought-after artist, culminating in a record deal with Columbia Records in 1955.
Mathis’ career skyrocketed with the release of his self-titled debut album in 1956, setting the stage for a prolific output that has amassed over 70 albums, captivating fans with classic hits such as “Wonderful Wonderful!”, “It’s Not for Me to Say”, “Chances Are”, “Gina”, and “What Will Mary Say”.
In recognition of his contributions to music, Mathis has received five Grammy nominations and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame three times, a testament to his enduring legacy.
In a reflective 2019 interview, Mathis remarked on his unwavering dedication to his craft: “I don’t think about retiring. I think about how I can keep singing for the rest of my life. I just have to pace myself.”
His recent album, “Christmas Time is Here”, released in October 2023, resonated with fans, underscoring his ability to create meaningful music throughout his career.
