Durban — The police are investigating a case of armed robbery after a man was followed and shot at while driving his car and eventually alighted from his vehicle and fled the scene.

This is linked to the incident where paramedics were shot at on Monday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that it is alleged that a 45-year-old man was driving on Victoria Embankment when he noticed that he was being followed.

“The suspects reportedly started shooting towards his vehicle until the vehicle came to a standstill along King Dinuzulu Road.

“The victim reportedly got out of his vehicle and fled, leaving an undisclosed amount of money in the boot.

“The suspects allegedly stole the money and fled the scene,” Ngcobo said.

She said that a case of armed robbery was opened for investigation at Umbilo SAPS.

In a 39-second video clip, people can be heard shouting in the background while two vehicles appear to have been stopped before the robot on King Dinuzulu Road.

Two suspects are seen taking two or three bags from the boot of a white vehicle and placing them into their vehicle.

One of the suspects then goes into the suspects’ vehicle while the other suspect does a final search of the white vehicle before they flee the scene.

Meanwhile, a white van can be seen beyond the robot.

There, what is believed to be a third suspect approaches the van, tries to open the door and then points a gun at the motorist.

The motorist eventually opens the door and alights the vehicle.

After a few seconds, the third suspect then jumps into their vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Earlier, ALS Paramedics Medical Services personnel survived unscathed after they were shot at while attending an accident scene.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that while responding to an accident scene on Berea Road near Canongate Road, their paramedics were shot at.

Jamieson said that paramedics were alerted to an accident scene that had just occurred while driving down Berea Road just after 12.15pm.

“While responding to the scene the paramedics saw men with firearms drawn at the crashed vehicle.

“The suspects then began shooting at our ambulance.

“Our crews managed to evade and call for help,” Jamieson said.

“The staff were very lucky to escape without injury as the vehicle had a hole showing a bullet had entered the front cabin above the driver's head and exited through the rear door.”

Jamieson said it is alleged that a foreign national was robbed of a large sum of money by the suspects.

“Our staff are obviously shaken up. However, as a business we are very grateful they were not injured,” he said.

Jamieson said no injuries were reported on the scene.
