Durban — Following a heatwave warning for the extreme north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms for parts of the province.
According to the impact-based warning issued on Tuesday morning, the warning is valid from 2pm on Tuesday to 10pm on Wednesday.
The Saws forecast indicated that areas including Abaqulusi, Alfred Duma - Indaka, Alfred Duma - Ladysmith, Big Five Hlabisa - Hlabisa, Big Five Hlabisa - Hluhluwe, Dannhauser, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma - Underberg, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Ingwe, Inkosi Langalibalele - Estcourt, Inkosi Langalibalele - Sobabili, Jozini, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mpofana - Giants Castle, Mpofana - Mooi River, Msinga, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Newcastle, Nkandla, Nongoma, Nquthu and Okhahlamba may be affected with damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail and heavy downpours are expected over western parts of KZN on Tuesday, spreading to northern parts on Wednesday.

“Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over western parts of KZN today (Tuesday) and spreading to northern parts tomorrow (Wednesday).
“Some of these thunderstorms may become severe and be accompanied by damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail and heavy downpours which may lead to localised flooding resulting in localised impacts,” Saws said.
Some of the impacts include:
- Localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles and livestock.
- Localised injuries and danger to life due to lightning.
- Localised and short-term disruption to municipal and other essential services.
- Localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges.
Saws urged residents to take caution or avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas as these may be susceptible to flooding and there may be sinkholes. Avoid outdoor activities as lightning, hail and flooding may cause injuries and death. If possible, stay indoors well clear of windows, shelter pets and cover vehicles. Move livestock and cars to safe sheltered areas as there may be flying debris.

Meanwhile, according to Saws, a heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected over Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the central and eastern parts of the North West, the northern parts of the Free State and the northern parts of KZN from Tuesday, December 3 until at least Friday, December 6.
