DURBAN - Sergeant Nhlakanipho Nkosinathi Mgwaba, 38, was remanded in custody after his court appearance on Monday.
Mgwaba will appear in court again on October 29 for a formal bail application.
Mgwaba is accused of killing his girlfriend, Zamandosi Cele, 25, on the night of October 13.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Grace Langa said both victim and suspect lived in the Engonyameni in uMlazi, south of Durban.
“It was reported they had a fight where the accused stabbed the deceased once in the neck and she died on the scene,” Langa said.
“The accused did not report to the police the whole night and on the following day, he left very early in the morning leaving his room locked.”
Langa said Mgwaba returned home around 5pm on October 14 and went to the kitchen in the main house and asked for food. However, when his daughter asked him for the keys to his room, Mgwaba refused.
“The daughter followed him when he was going to his room and when the accused opened the door the daughter saw somebody lying dead on the floor and she informed her grandfather who then went to the police at Bhekithemba and came back with them and they discovered a dead body,” Langa said.
She said a case of murder was opened at the Bhekithemba Police Station and Mgwaba was arrested.
Mgwaba is a sergeant at the Umlazi Police Station.
