DURBAN - A pedestrian was killed after being run over by two vehicles on the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal.
IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said on Tuesday afternoon that IPSS responded to reports of an accident on the N2 north bound between the Tongaat Toll Plaza and Ballito, north of Durban.
“On arrival of advanced life support paramedics, it was ascertained that a pedestrian had attempted to cross the busy highway, when they were struck by two light motor vehicles.
“Paramedics declared the patient dead on arrival,” Herbst said.
He added that the N2 north bound was severely affected and motorists were urged to use an alternative route.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, one person was killed following a crash on the R61 between Margate and Ramsgate in the South Coast.
The KwaZulu Private Ambulance (KZPA) service responded to reports of a collision.
KZPA said that on arrival emergency services found that a truck and vehicle had been involved in a head-on collision.
“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that one patient sustained minor injuries.”
KZPA said the patient was treated on scene before being taken to hospital.
“Sadly though, one occupant sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived.”
The incidents came the day before Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula was set to release the 2021 preliminary festive season road statistics on Wednesday morning at 7am.
Mbalula will be joined by Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Jacob Mamabolo and Road Traffic Management Corporation CEO advocate Makhosini Msibi.
