Durban — The DA in KwaZulu-Natal will picket outside the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) offices in Durban on Monday, and hand over a memorandum of demands.
The party’s provincial leader Francios Rodgers said the memorandum would relate to inhuman living conditions suffered by thousands of flood victims at eThekwini community halls.
“The memorandum follows ongoing attempts by the DA to engage with the SAHRC, but they continue to snub us. Moreover the document also relates to the collapse of sanitation infrastructure within the municipality, which is now having disastrous effects on thousands of residents,” said Rodgers.
The picket would be led by DA’s eThekwini caucus leader Thabani Mthethwa, the chairperson in the province Dean Macpherson and Rodgers.
Recently, Rodgers said the provincial government did not care about the flood victims. This was after he had gone to inspect a building housing the flood victims who were evicted and dumped outside the Lamontville police station in recent weeks.
He also said they would look at this matter from a legal perspective when it comes to the failures of the SAHRC, eThekwini Municipality and the KZN government.
“The SAHRC has done little to nothing to assist, we will now be exploring legal action in order to ensure that flood victims get housing and dignity speedily,” Rodgers said.
Furthermore, Rodgers said it was critical that the SAHRC step up and fulfil its mandate. He said: “These issues have now become a human rights crisis following local, provincial and national governments’ failure to act.”
