Cape Town – The 39-year-old woman who died following a shark attack at Plettenberg Bay’s Central Beach has been identified as Kimon Bisogno of Observatory in Cape Town.
Bisogno attempted to swim from Beacon Isle Hotel Beach to Central Beach – a distance of about 100m – early on Sunday morning, according to the police.
Her husband and child were walking on the beach observing her at the time.
Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said: “While she was swimming, a shark attacked her in shallow waters and fatally injuring her.
“The NSRI’s Plettenberg Bay station was activated to assist her husband to recover her body from the water.
“She was declared dead by paramedics on scene. As a result, police opened an inquest docket for further investigation,” he said.
Pojie said a post-mortem is to be conducted on the body to determine the cause of death.
Beaches have since been closed in Plettenberg Bay by the Bitou Municipality.
Condolences have been pouring in for Bisogno, who was much loved in the Observatory community.
Affectionately known as “Kiki”, ObsWatch chairperson Carolyn Dudgeon said she was involved in many ways in the Observatory community.
“When it came to volunteering to serve her community, Kiki was always the first to put her hand up, no matter what the task. She was there to help.
“No matter how busy her life was from running a successful business, being a mom to a beautiful baby girl and using her time to uplift the homeless community of Observatory through her project, the Obs Pasta Kitchen,” Dudgeon said.
“Kiki’s goal was more than just running a feeding scheme… She aimed to build human connections through kindness, conversation and yoga to help change peoples lives for the better. Kiki lived to serve her community, no matter who they were or where they lived, and she did so with her incredible smile and heart-warming laughter.
“On Saturday morning, Kiki spent the morning outside Spar before heading off on her holiday, serving hot dogs for our Heritage Day membership drive.
“The photos she shared with our group after the Heritage Day event were those of light and happiness. This is how we will always remember our friend,” Dudgeon said.
