Cape Town - Official numbers reveal that more than 105 000 spectators attended the Rugby World Cup Sevens at the DHL Stadium this past weekend.
Cape Town successfully hosted the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 from Friday to Sunday where Australia and Fiji were crowned women and men’s champions of the quadrennial tournament.
The attendance figures broke the previous record numbers set in 2018 in San Francisco.
“It was amazing to see the fans come out in their numbers to watch Africa’s first ever Rugby World Cup Sevens. The atmosphere was amazing and the action on the field kept the fans on the edge of their seats. A lot of work has gone into making this a successful event,” said mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
“On behalf of the City of Cape Town, I would like to thank all those involved in the planning and execution of this very special event. We would also like to express our gratitude to World Rugby for their confidence in Cape Town’s ability to host major events. It was a pleasure to host the more than 105 000 sports lovers in our beautiful city.”
A total of 84 matches were played over three days.
Most of the projected electricity used by the event, including that from on-site generators, was greened by renewable energy certificates (RECs) supplied by the city.
The city said this means that for every kWh of electricity used during the event, a kWh of renewable energy from the Darling Wind Farm was directly allocated.
Thousands of fans took advantage of the free MyCiTi event shuttle and Fan Walk, which was open for all three days and facilitated ease of access to and egress from the event.
