Cape Town - The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has advised drivers of roadworks on Settlers Way and Hospital Bend along both carriageways (including inbound and outbound ramps) between Kromboom Parkway (M5) and Philip Kgosana Drive in the southern area (M5).
Most of the work is planned to take place from this evening, Monday, 14 October 2024 until Sunday, 21 December 2024.
After the builders break, the contractor will return towards the end of January 2025 to finalise the road markings and maintenance repairs to various bridges along these roads.
Night work has been scheduled between 19:00 and 05:00, Monday to Saturday, to avoid an increase in traffic congestion along these key routes.
Mayco Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas said that the resurfacing project along Settlers Way and Hospital Bend forms part of regular maintenance “to prolong the longevity of the City’s road network, especially along these major roads and routes which experience a great deal of traffic daily and throughout the day”.
“Crucial maintenance projects like these will assist us in keeping Cape Town moving for decades to come. The closure of traffic lanes adjacent to the construction work area will only be permitted during specified off-peak periods at night.
“The planned works will include the resurfacing of various roads along Settlers Way on the M5 and Hospital Bend, along Philip Kgosana Drive. We would like to thank road users for their patience while works are under way,” said Quintas.
Only one traffic lane per direction will be closed at a time. Where two lanes need to be closed on a three lane roadway to create a work area, one lane shall be dropped at a time with a suitable stabilising area between the two lanes.
Traffic accommodation will be implemented and managed by the appointed contractor, and traffic control will be applied at intersections as needed.
The project will involve milling and removing the existing surface layers, followed by resurfacing the roads with new bituminous layers.
New catch pits and manholes will be constructed at the locations indicated on the map. Additionally, new kerbs and channels will be installed along the various roads in the area, and new road studs will be fitted.
Minor stormwater drainage works will also be carried out by extending the capacity of catch pits. And damaged guardrails along the outbound and inbound carriageways will be replaced as well.
